I really enjoyed how this duology wrapped up, but I'm not a fan of how fast it wrapped up。 I feel like it was a little rushed near the end but overall I really enjoy both Crown of Coral and Pearl and Kingdom of Sea and Stone。 I love the ocean and this book made me fall in love with it again and anything sea related is an automatic love for me。 Maybe we'll get more of Nor and Talin eventually but for now I'm happy with how their story ended。 I really enjoyed how this duology wrapped up, but I'm not a fan of how fast it wrapped up。 I feel like it was a little rushed near the end but overall I really enjoy both Crown of Coral and Pearl and Kingdom of Sea and Stone。 I love the ocean and this book made me fall in love with it again and anything sea related is an automatic love for me。 Maybe we'll get more of Nor and Talin eventually but for now I'm happy with how their story ended。 。。。more

The first was so much better。 She felt so unresolved at the end。

I liked it better than the first one。 I would love to see a book about the Galethians。

“Beauty cannot disguise who we really are beneath the surface。”A kingdom of sea and stone is a book about a girl overcoming being defined by her beauty, the things she would do for her sister, and fighting for her people, who abandon and ridicule her any chance they get。 I really enjoyed this duology。Overall, 4。5/5 ⭐️

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 A really good sequel to end the story。 The ending was extremely satisfactory, where the main character comes to accept where she belongs in the world。Nor is a character that readers are able to empathize with and really understand。 All the characters in this book were well thought out, and even the main villain was well-developed。。。Although Talin was amazing, I secretly shipped Ceren and Nor together。 Ceren (much like Maven from 'Red Queen' by Victoria Aveyard) is a misunderstood villain who des A really good sequel to end the story。 The ending was extremely satisfactory, where the main character comes to accept where she belongs in the world。Nor is a character that readers are able to empathize with and really understand。 All the characters in this book were well thought out, and even the main villain was well-developed。。。Although Talin was amazing, I secretly shipped Ceren and Nor together。 Ceren (much like Maven from 'Red Queen' by Victoria Aveyard) is a misunderstood villain who deserved better and is a character that readers just cannot get enough of。 。。。more

This was predictable。 And not in the fun “I’m good at solving mysteries” sense; just predictable。 The parts that were a small almost-surprise were so easy and convenient, they probably would have been better just being predictable moments。 The ending and resolution and epilogue were soooooo easy and dull, I was just reading to finish the book and move on。 I’m still not sure what to make of this。 There wasn’t a lot of romance, and what romance there was wasn’t done well enough for this to be a ro This was predictable。 And not in the fun “I’m good at solving mysteries” sense; just predictable。 The parts that were a small almost-surprise were so easy and convenient, they probably would have been better just being predictable moments。 The ending and resolution and epilogue were soooooo easy and dull, I was just reading to finish the book and move on。 I’m still not sure what to make of this。 There wasn’t a lot of romance, and what romance there was wasn’t done well enough for this to be a romance novel。 There wasn’t a lot of action: everything was solved super easily after all of the MCs agonizing。 There wasn’t a heavy fantasy aspect: not a lot of world building aside from settings (mostly just names of where we were) and coherent lore? Ah, yes。 The nice little thing in suologies where the first book is significantly better than the second one。Nice trope? or something idk。All right, get on with it。 I read the book a few months ago but didn't really feel like doing a review, so like。。。 forgive my forgettingI know there was a cat。 And a witch。 And that Nor has a pretty wholesome ending (won't tell what she does 'cause I don't want to mark this as having spoilers)You might be thinking "Well yeah, you don't remember what happens be Ah, yes。 The nice little thing in suologies where the first book is significantly better than the second one。Nice trope? or something idk。All right, get on with it。 I read the book a few months ago but didn't really feel like doing a review, so like。。。 forgive my forgettingI know there was a cat。 And a witch。 And that Nor has a pretty wholesome ending (won't tell what she does 'cause I don't want to mark this as having spoilers)You might be thinking "Well yeah, you don't remember what happens because it's been so long since you've read the book!"Thing is, I remember almost everything that goes on in the first book, and I read that one two years ago。。。So it's definitely not my fault。 。。。more

"Kingdom of Sea and Stone" is the follow-up to Mara Rutherford's earlier YA fantasy。 Our heroine, Nor, recently escaped a forced engagement to a haunted, horrible prince, is now on the run with her love interest, her twin sister, and a host of friends。 The goal is to defeat the evil prince once and for all, but can they do it?Pros: "Kingdom of Sea and Stone" has a very visual quality to it。 While it doesn't stand out as much as the first book did (possibly because the scenery is more "normal" in "Kingdom of Sea and Stone" is the follow-up to Mara Rutherford's earlier YA fantasy。 Our heroine, Nor, recently escaped a forced engagement to a haunted, horrible prince, is now on the run with her love interest, her twin sister, and a host of friends。 The goal is to defeat the evil prince once and for all, but can they do it?Pros: "Kingdom of Sea and Stone" has a very visual quality to it。 While it doesn't stand out as much as the first book did (possibly because the scenery is more "normal" in the bulk of this book), it's still the same world。 The main characters are, for the most part, sensible and they act like adults。 The book is a quick, fun read。Cons: Not enough of the villainous character。 Since everyone in the book is on Nor's side (in some way), it doesn't feel like this book has a lot of conflict in it。 For that reason, the diminished presence of the villain in this book stands out。 Note: This book review was based on an ARC from Edelweiss。 。。。more

Somehow this book didn't work for me because it was a book about Nor - and the supporting characters really are supporting characters。 Ceren's (view spoiler)[death by going over the cliff was one of the most disappointing moments to me too。 (hide spoiler)] Somehow this book didn't work for me because it was a book about Nor - and the supporting characters really are supporting characters。 Ceren's (view spoiler)[death by going over the cliff was one of the most disappointing moments to me too。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

Ok。 I hated pretty much everything but the world building in the first book。 The world building was crap in this book and everything else was just as bad if not worse than the first book。 Dialogue? Crap。 Plot? Boring crap。 New characters? Couldn’t find a reason to care about them—more crap。 I’m officially done with this series and author。

Came so close to crying at the end of this book!! Not your typical ending but everything you need in an ending。 Following the story of Nor, Zadie, Talin and many others。 This second installment packs a punch! I couldn't put it down, the twists and turns weren't how I thought it was going to happen。 I witness Nor realize who she truly is ! It gives a greater understanding of how to find yourself。 Amazing book, epic characters and an all around great book! Came so close to crying at the end of this book!! This one picks up right where the first one ends, so if it’s been a long time since you read the first one (like me) you might struggle some in the beginning remembering things。It had some good moments and quotes, but also some really cheesy lines and overdone moments。I enjoyed the first one but this one really seemed to stretch out and I found it boring at times。I think it will be the conclusion, I don’t know how she’d turn it into a trilogy。

I liked the first book better。 This seemed so predictable。 I may be the reason that I stared this after reading the masterpiese that was Rule of Wolves but I didn't got in this story easily。 The plot evolved very slowly and I missed the dynamic between these characters。 I liked the first book better。 This seemed so predictable。 I may be the reason that I stared this after reading the masterpiese that was Rule of Wolves but I didn't got in this story easily。 The plot evolved very slowly and I missed the dynamic between these characters。 。。。more

3。5/5I'm really happy that this is just a duology because if it was more I definitely think it would have been boring。I still wish there was more of a relationship between Ceren and Nor but that is not a option。Talin is a dreamy god, not more to say about that。The last half was kinda predictable but overall good。 3。5/5I'm really happy that this is just a duology because if it was more I definitely think it would have been boring。I still wish there was more of a relationship between Ceren and Nor but that is not a option。Talin is a dreamy god, not more to say about that。The last half was kinda predictable but overall good。 。。。more

Ugh 😤 😤😤😤😤😤😤 I’m so mad。 It isn’t that I didn’t like this book it’s just that I didn’t enjoy this as much as the first。 I flew through the first and had such high hopes and splat。 😶 And I hated the ending, not because of Nor because good for you but really nothing after that。。。 for goodness sake。 I guess after the first one I was just hopping for more 🙁

Not nearly as good as the first book, which was a delicious surprise。 My name is Coral, so it was a great thing to have the protagonist called Nor (Coral) even tho I never knew in what language。 Anyhow。。。 I was very disappointed, and the upside of this is that I don't have to read a third book。 I didn't like the character development, and I couldn't recognize anything of what I enjoyed from the first book, on this one。 Not nearly as good as the first book, which was a delicious surprise。 My name is Coral, so it was a great thing to have the protagonist called Nor (Coral) even tho I never knew in what language。 Anyhow。。。 I was very disappointed, and the upside of this is that I don't have to read a third book。 I didn't like the character development, and I couldn't recognize anything of what I enjoyed from the first book, on this one。 。。。more

I loved this series! it was a very fun fantasy read, and the story was very well written and drew me in。 Some things at the end sort of left me perplexed though, because there is all this buildup, and then something so simple happens。 Besides that, it was great!

Loved this duology。 Very pleased with the ending! I fell in love with Nor and her adventures。

After enjoying the first book so much, I’m sad to say that this sequel disappointed me。 It wasn’t the writing style, the story, or anything technical; I feel like the author’s vision for the characters (mainly Nor and Talin) changed, and I didn’t like it。 Nor became some uncertain girl, wavering in her decisions。 It felt like the author was trying to turn her relationship with Talin into a cage, and Talin was at times just the tool for it。 It bothered me。Aside from my complaints about Nor and Ta After enjoying the first book so much, I’m sad to say that this sequel disappointed me。 It wasn’t the writing style, the story, or anything technical; I feel like the author’s vision for the characters (mainly Nor and Talin) changed, and I didn’t like it。 Nor became some uncertain girl, wavering in her decisions。 It felt like the author was trying to turn her relationship with Talin into a cage, and Talin was at times just the tool for it。 It bothered me。Aside from my complaints about Nor and Talin’s relationship, I think the story ended well。 Had certain aspects (okay, one) of the plot been wrapped up how I wanted, I could have given this book 4 stars。 Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, so it gets 3。How it ends: (view spoiler)[Talia, Talin and Zoi’s mother, had gathered troops and is going to march on New Castle to take it from Ceren。 Nor proposes (to Talia) that she be allowed to speak with Ceren and try to free the Verenians, whom he has captured and is using to mine more bloodstone (which he uses to control people)。 Talia agrees and offers to send guards with he if Nor will let Talin go and not pursue their relationship so he can be married to a foreign princess in order to strengthen the kingdom’s alliances。 Nor agrees, but she never tells Talin。 (Ever。 Am I the only one who sees a problem with this?)Ceren agrees to free the Varenians in exchange for a bowl of Nor’s blood (he ingests it to stay strong)。 Zadie goes in Nor’s place, but Ceren figures it out。 He starts killing Varenians and only stops when Nor agrees to go with him。He spends the next little while trying to buy her loyalty/love/admiration。 He also tries to control her with a bloodstone, but she is able to fight it。 Talia’s troops attack, and Nor follows Ceren outside to additional troops he has。 She breaks the blood bond, and the soldiers attack Ceren until he flees。 Talia takes New Castle, and Ceren has Zoi kidnapped。Nor, Talin, and Talia run into Roan while they’re searching for Zoi。 They had realized the war affected everyone and were returning。 They help look for Zoi。 Ceren finds them and threatens to kill Zoi。 He offers Talia her daughter or the throne; she chooses her daughter。 Ceren steps off of the cliff and dies。A council is formed of leaders from all the territories。 Talin is chosen as regent until Zoi is old enough to rule。 A new castle will be build south of Riaga, near the sea。 Zadie is Zoi’s governess。 Any Varenian who chooses to stay on land will be given a small plot in one of the territories。Nor, who has spent the whole book unsure of what she wants to do, still has no idea。 Until she tells Talin she wants to travel and learn things。 She wants “freedom”—because apparently she can’t be free if she stays and marries him。 But he’s understanding and tells her to go, that he’ll be waiting for her。 For who knows how long? And that’s honestly the part that keeps this book from being 4 stars。 Why should marriage to a good man be portrayed as a cage? Throughout the book, she insisted to people that there was no betrothal agreement between her and Talin, that they were friends。 But she also kisses him and talks about how much she loves him。 It ticks me off。 He obviously loves her, and I think she loves him。 But I spent a lot of the book wondering if she was going to leave him for Roan。 At least that didn’t happen。 But she should have married him instead of thinking marriage was a cage that would prevent her from being who she wanted to be and doing what she wanted to do。 Stupid。 (hide spoiler)]Note: Can’t think of anything bad。 Maybe some mild swearing, if anything。 。。。more

This book was okay。 I really enjoyed the first book, but I feel like it should’ve been a stand-alone with an epilogue rather than an entire other book。 It feels like a lot was added to this world for the sake of a second book that wasn’t wholly necessary。 Again, it wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t great either。

I absolutely ADORE 'Crown of Coral and Pearl'。 It is the book that got me into even reading ANY fantasy。 I immediately knew that I was going to have to read 'Kingdom of Sea and Stone' and live in the land of Ilara and the sea village of Varenia just a little longer。。。。。So, my relationship with 'Kingdom of Sea and Stone' is a complicated one。 The world of Varenia, the village literally on the sea, that I love so much is still present, but we don't spend much time in it。 The bulk of this novel is I absolutely ADORE 'Crown of Coral and Pearl'。 It is the book that got me into even reading ANY fantasy。 I immediately knew that I was going to have to read 'Kingdom of Sea and Stone' and live in the land of Ilara and the sea village of Varenia just a little longer。。。。。So, my relationship with 'Kingdom of Sea and Stone' is a complicated one。 The world of Varenia, the village literally on the sea, that I love so much is still present, but we don't spend much time in it。 The bulk of this novel is spent on land。。。and we all know how I prefer the ocean over land any day of the week。 Plus, the atmosphere of Varenia is just so enchanting。Nor is reunited with her sister, Zadie, and I just love their sisterly bond。 The lengths they go to for each other is just。。。sweet。 Nor will always be a favorite fearless female character for me。 She's bold, daring, and complex, everything you'd want in a heroine。 Zadie is not quite as prominent and is a bit more defined by her infatuation with Sami than her own personality。 I never really care for romance much in books, but Prince Talin's relationship with Nor was ravenous, daring, and dangerous in the first book, and I didn't hate it。 I was hoping for more of their adventurous love, but instead I felt that it fell flat in this one。 Talin was a central character, but it also felt like he was in the background a bit too much。 I honestly was rooting for Nor to part from him and develop a love interest with Roan at many points。 Ceren was still his callous self。 We did get a little bit of his backstory in this book, so it was nice to see the "why he is the way he is" aspect; however, I really didn't enjoy his character much。 The first book felt magical and entrancing- all the descriptions of life on the sea and the atmosphere drew me in。 This book focused more on kingdoms at war and the politics between the people of land and sea。 Dare I say that maybe 'Crown of Coral and Pearl' makes a better stand alone book without this second installment? I can see what the author was trying to do with this one, and it did tie up some loose ends, but I really expected more since I fell so hard for the first book。 I totally recommend that anyone even remotely interested in fantasy pick up 'Crown of Coral and Pearl', but maybe just stop there。。。。and, I will say that I loved that book so much that I can overlook this one and totally see myself grabbing more of Rutherford's works in the future。 2。5/5 rounded up to 3/5 for Goodreads 。。。more
